Rivera Named Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz
Rivera Named Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz January 15, 2001 AUBURN- Megan Rivera, a goalkeeper from the Auburn soccer team, was named 2001 first-team Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz Magazine, it was announced on Tuesday. The Miami, Fla., native was also named third-team All-American by the publication. ''To receive the honor of being Auburn's first-ever All-American is quite an accomplishment for Megan and a reflection on the success of our team,'' Auburn head coach Karen Richter said. Rivera started all 20 matches in goal for the Tigers and posted an 11-8-1 record. She helped lead the Tigers to a runner-up finish in the Southeastern Conference tournament and a birth into the program's first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. She posted Auburn single season records with a 1.02 goals against average and 102 saves, earning five shutouts along the way. The awards mark the first time in Auburn history a player has earned national recognition on any post-season team. Rivera was named to the Soccer Buzz first-team All-Central Region and to the All-Central Region Freshman team earlier this month and was the SEC's Freshman of the Year and first-team All-SEC goalkeeper.
