Jackie Smith Named To SEC Good Works Team
March 22, 2006 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Auburn junior Jackie Smith has been named to the Southeastern Conference Gymnastics Good Works Team, as announced by the conference office on Wednesday. A native of Marietta, Ga., and Auburn's team captain, Smith was one of seven gymnasts, one from each competing institution, who were named to the Good Works Team, which recognizes an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. A two-year letterwinner, Smith has been an active member in the community by participating in numerous community service projects in and around the Auburn community. "We are excited that after three years of hard work and leadership, our team captain has been recognized for the outstanding work she has done in the community," head coach Jeff Thompson. "This proves what we've always said, `our largest contributions aren't always made on the competition floor, but outside the gym and inside the classroom and around the community.'" Smith has been an active contributor to the Reading with the Tigers Program, which also encourages children to stay in school and the importance of education. In addition to her contribution to the reading with the Tigers program, Smith also helped collect donations for the Hurricane Katrina relief effort and volunteered with other members of the team at the Capital City BBQ Pig Out, benefiting Children's Harbor. Prior to Christmas, Smith and the Tigers made Christmas boxes to help the less fortunate who are not able to afford gifts during the holidays. A fine arts major, Smith has exhibitioned on bars thoroughout the season. Auburn travels to Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday for the SEC Championships, which begin at 6:05 p.m. at the BJCC.
