Women's Golf Looks To Three-Peat At SEC Championship This Weekend
Tournament Notes
April 18, 2007 Auburn, Ala. - The two-time defending SEC Champion Auburn women's golf team will go for a three-peat this weekend at the par 72, 6,432-yard Old Waverly course located in West Point, Miss. "The girls are so excited about this tournament," head coach Kim Evans said. "As a coach I am ready for them to play. I think it is hard for every single player in the SEC right now not to be excited to be going to Old Waverly. It is a great venue and the girls are looking forward to playing there. Our team has a chance to go for a three-peat and hopefully we will stay patient and get off to the start we would like." The Tigers' lineup will consist of senior Nicole Hage, freshman Candace Schepperle, junior Margaret Shirley, red-shirt freshman Marisa Milligan and junior Abigale Schepperle. Hage leads all Tigers with a No. 22 ranking, followed by C. Schepperle in 33rd, Shirley in 45th, Milligan in 60th and A. Schepperle in 65th. It took birdie putts from Maria Martinez, Margaret Shirley and Abigale Schepperle on the 18th hole a year ago for Auburn to take its second straight title. Auburn finished one-stroke ahead of Tennessee to claim its sixth SEC crown. In 2005 the Tigers were victorious over Georgia after a three-hole playoff.
Fifth-ranked Auburn will once again have to contend with the Lady Bulldogs, who are ranked third in the latest Golfweek ranking, in addition to three other teams ranked in the top 20 - No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 10 Florida and No. 13 Tennessee. The Tigers have won six SEC Championships (1989, 1996, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2006), the last five coming under Evans. Auburn has also crowned five individual champions with the last being Martinez last year. Auburn is set to tee off with Tennessee and Georgia Friday morning at 9:20 a.m. CT on the first hole.
