BURTON, SEGERLIN NAMED AUBURN NOMINEES FOR McWHORTER POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP
March 22, 2007 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Equestrian student-athlete Natalie Burton and diver Steven Segerlin have been nominated by Auburn University for the H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship. The H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship has been presented by the Southeastern Conference since 1986 to the league's top male and female scholar-athletes. The Southeastern Conference will name the 2007 recipients of the H.Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship on April 6 in conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day. Burton, a senior from Germantown, Tenn., has earned a 3.32 grade point average, majoring in History. She is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll (2006-07 Spring Honor Roll announced later in spring) and three-time Auburn University Academic Top Tiger honoree. She is a member of the Honor College at Auburn and a Dean's List student. A member of the 2006 NCAA Championship squad, Burton took High Ride honors in meets against Stephen F. Austin, Georgia and South Dakota State in 2005. She also earned MVP honors over fences in a meet at Baylor. She is active in community service as vice-chair of Auburn's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She was active in the SAAC's canned food drive, clothing drive and has worked youth horse camps and visited local elementary schools. She was on Auburn's Committee of Intercollegiate Athletics Equity, Welfare and Sportsmanship subcommittee in 2005-06.
He was the SEC champion in the 1-meter, 3-meter and platform at the 2007 SEC Championships where he set a SEC record on the 3-meter and platform. He is a member of the 2007 USA National Team and was the 2006 NCAA Champion in the platform. He was also named the 2007 NCAA Diver of the Year after winning the 3-meter and platform competitions and placing third on the 1-meter board at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Segerlin is the 2006-07 president of Auburn's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee where he has created and implemented new programs for student-athletes in the All-Auburn, All-Athletes Program.

Alabama - Emeel Salem, Baseball (Male) / Aymara Albury, Track & Field (Female) National Student-Athlete Day was created in 1987 by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports http://www.ncasports.org (NCAS) and Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society http://www.sportinsociety.org, and presented by the National Collegiate Athletics Association http://www.ncaa.org (NCAA) and the National Federation of State High School Associations http://www.nfhs.org (NFHS). National Student-Athlete Day is held each April 6 to celebrate outstanding student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics while having made significant contributions to the community. It is also a time to recognize those parents, teachers, coaches and school systems which make it possible for young people to find the balance between academics and athletics. Each year, the SEC, in conjunction with AT&T, an SEC Corporate Champion sponsor, provides the league's male and female McWhorter Scholar-Athlete Post-Graduate Scholarship recipients with a $10,000 post-graduate scholarship. The 22 remaining male and female finalists for the award will also receive a $5,000 post-graduate scholarship. The award recipients are chosen by a committee of Faculty Athletics Representatives from the 12 SEC institutions and are honored at the SEC Spring Meetings in Sandestin, Fla. on May 31. Last year's recipients were Florida basketball player Sarah Lowe and LSU football player Rudy Niswanger.
