Auburn Men's Golf In 29th After NCAA Championship Second Round

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Auburn men's golf team shot a 291 for a 586 total and is in 29th after the NCAA Championship second round at the par-70, 6803-yard Gold Course at the Golden Horseshoe Thursday. The Tigers are 16 shots off the 15-team cutline that will be made following Friday's third round.
Junior All-SEC Patton Kizzire carded a 2-over 72 and is tied for 91st at 5-over 145. The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native recorded four birdies, closing with ones at No. 6 and on the final hole of the day at the par-4 ninth. He also made birdies on Nos. 3 and 11, but had double bogeys on Nos. 1 and 12 to go along with bogeys on Nos. 2 and 10.
Sophomore All-SEC Glenn Northcutt rebounded from a first round 75 to post the Tigers' low score of the day with a 71 and is tied for 102nd at 6-over 146. The Dothan, Ala., began the day with a birdie on the 10th, then was sidetracked by a triple bogey at No. 12 and bogeys on Nos. 14 and 2. Northcutt eagled the par-5 sixth and birdied the eighth for a 71.
Senior Andrew Medley is tied for 115th with a 74-147, junior Jay Moseley is tied for 126th with a 75-149 and junior Steven Groover is tied for 139th with a 74-151.
After going 17-over on their first 14 holes of the day, the Tigers finished the round by going 6-under on the final four holes.
"It is pretty obvious to me that the golf course has our number," head coach Mike Griffin said. "We haven't been able to do too many good things. I'm proud of the way we closed the round today, but we just haven't played good enough golf. Tomorrow is another day so we are going to come out competing and give it our best shot. We are playing for pride."
Stanford held onto the lead with a 2-under 278 for a two-round 7-under 553 total, one shot ahead of Minnesota (278-276--554). Coastal Carolina is in third at 277-281--558 followed by East Tennessee State (280-280--560), Charlotte (279-283--562), Georgia Tech (288-275--563), UCLA (283-280--563), Oklahoma State (287-279--566), Texas (278-288--566) and Alabama (284-283--567).
Georgia State (286-282--568) and Florida (278-290--568) are tied for 11th ahead of South Carolina (291-278--569), Vanderbilt (284-285--569) and Michigan State (283-287--570), which is on the cutline in 15th. Georgia (282-289--571), Tennessee (284-287--571) and Florida State (283-288--571) are tied for16th ahead of Lamar (285-287--572), North Carolina (289-283--572), Duke (294-278--572), Tulsa (284-291--575) and Southern Cal (289-286--575).
Arizona State is in 24th at 286-290--576 in front of Arizona (290-287--577), Wake Forest (293-287--580), Louisville (288-292--580), New Mexico (293-288--581), Auburn (295-291--586) and Texas Tech (293-294--587).
Minnesota's Bronson LaCassie fired a 5-under 65 for a 8-under 132 total to take the individual lead over Vanderbilt's Jon Curran (70-64--134), Stanford's Rob Grube (64-71--135), Coastal Carolina's Dustin Johnson (67-68--135), Georgia Tech's Cameron Tringale (67-68--135) and UAB's Zach Sucher (68-67--135).
Auburn will begin third round play Friday at noon Central as the low 15 teams and low six individuals not on those teams will make the cut for the final round Saturday. Live-scoring of the NCAA Championship is available at www.golfstat.com.
