Men's Tennis Fails To Advance At Pac-10 Championships

OJAI, Calif. - The Arizona State men's tennis team had two players advance to the second round of the main draw at the Pac-10 Championships Thursday at Ojai's Libbey Park, but were unable to advance any further.

ASU's Jonathan Kinsella (So., Astley, England) defeated Washington's Alex Slovic in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to a second round match against UCLA's Chris Lam. Kinsella was upended by Lam in second round competition, 6-3, 7-5. Clinton Letcher (Jr., Melbourne, Australia) posted a 6-4, 7-6 first round victory over California's Wayne Wong. Letcher followed up with a second round match against UCLA's Alberto Francis where he was unable to advance, falling to Francis, 6-4, 7-6(5).

The Sun Devils' Chris Stewart (Sr., Adelaide, Australia) and Christopher Biro (Fr., Adelaide, Australia) fell in their first round matches. Stewart took USC's Ruben Torres to a third set before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Biro was upended in two sets by the Trojans' Adriano Biaselia, 6-4, 6-2.

In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, ASU's Daniel Davies (So., Sydney, Australia) won his first round match over Oregon's Eric Pickaird, 6-2, 6-0, and then advanced through his second round match against James Pade of Stanford by a no-show recorded by Pade. Nick Hegarty (Fr., Saint Joseph, Miso.) defeated Chris King of Oregon, 7-6, 7-5, to advance to his second round showdown against Paul Warkentin of Arizona where he was defeated, 7-5, 6-2.

Ryan McBride (So., Tempe, Ariz.) was defeated in his first round match by Washington's Nicholas Weiss, 6-4, 6-2.

Pac-10 Championship action will continue tomorrow with quarterfinal single and early round doubles action.
