Brunelli Wins 50m Freestyle At Counsilman Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - On the second day of competition at the Counsilman Classic at the IUPUI Natatorium, Arizona State senior Nick Brunelli captured the 50m freestyle title with a time of 22.69 in the USA Swimming Grand Prix meet. Brunelli came into the evening's finals as the fourth seed after a preliminary round time of 23.19 but touched the wall first in the evening's finals in his first long course meters meet of the year.

In a 200m breaststroke final including several of the world's preeminent swimmers in this discipline, junior Ágnes Kovács, the reigning Olympic gold medalist in the event, touched the wall in fourth place with a time of 2:30.57. The 400m freestyle saw sophomore Kathryn Hennessy notch a time of 4:29.59 while former Sun Devil standout Mandy Stanford placed sixth overall with a time of 4:18.62.

In the 100m backstroke, senior Ahmed Hussein placed fourth with a time of 56.17 while former Sun Devil Christian Harcsas finished 12th with a time of 57.75. Sophomore David Kolozar placed fourth in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:00.17, almost a second faster than his prelim time of 2:01.09.

The Counsilman Classic concludes tomorrow with the 800m freestyle (women), 1500m freestyle (men), 200m IM, 200m backstroke, and 100m freestyle.
