WASHINGTON - The American University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the George Mason Invitational this weekend, taking seventh and eighth place respectively.
The University of Maryland, Baltimore County won the men's competition with a total score of 1,305 points. George Mason was tops on the women's side with 815 points. American totaled 225 points on the men's side and 226 on the women's.
Joe Coronato was the men's team top finisher on Friday with a third place time of 21.27 in the 50 free prelims. Dan Nagelberg placed 16th in the 200 IM prelims, finishing the course in 2:00.66. Meghan Thiel placed second in the 500 free prelims with a time of 4:59.63. Dorothy Isaacs finished seventh in the 200 IM prelims in 2:11.50. Isaacs had a second top-10 finish in the 50 free prelims with a 24.70.
Six Eagles competed in championship finals Saturday. Thiel was the highest place-winner from either team, finishing third in the 200 free (1:53.11). Coronato placed fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1:43.34. Matt Pelletier and Mary Margaret Lopez had fifth place finishes in the 100 back and 100 fly respectively.
Thiel became American's only individual winner Sunday by taking the 1650 free in 17:05.70. Coronato placed third in the 100 free prelims, posting a time of 47.00 and second in the 100 free championship final (46.79). Isaacs placed sixth in the 100 free championship final in 53.52 and also had a top-10 finish in the 100 free prelims (53.68). Eleanor Clay had her first top-10 finish of the weekend when she finished sixth in the 200 breast prelims (2:27.66). In the 200 breast championship final Clay finished eighth in 2:27.52.

The Eagles will return to action next week, Nov. 29 through Dec. 2, when they compete at the USA Swimming Nationals in Atlanta, Ga.
