UAB Softball Hosts Georgia State Thursday in Doubleheader

April 5, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team is scheduled to host Georgia State Thursday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. at George Ward Park. The Blazers will take on the Panthers for the 11th time in school history and the sixth time in Birmingham.

UAB enters the doubleheader with a 20-15 overall record after taking two of three from Tulsa last weekend. GSU is 13-20 on the year and split in a mid-week doubleheader against Troy Tuesday night.

"We are glad to be at home hosting Georgia State in a doubleheader," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "They have a strong program and we need to be ready to play. We hope to execute both offensively and defensively and continue to improve our game. Several of our athletes are playing great ball and we look to play solid throughout the lineup."

The Blazers are led by sophomore Holly Krzan and junior Lindsay Stanley. Krzan is hitting .350 on the year while Stanley has 20 stolen bases and a .306 average. Senior Chelsea McCall also enters the doubleheader with a six-game hitting streak. UAB has relied on sophomore Jennifer Nelson in the circle this season. Nelson is 9-6 overall with a 1.62 ERA.

GSU is led by Mary Kath Branan and Jackie Jaegle at the plate. Branan is leading the team with a .316 average in 117 at-bats. Jaegle has played in 29 games this season and is second on the team in batting average (.293). Elizabeth Hyman is the ace on the GSU pitching staff. Hyman is 8-8 overall with a 2.42 ERA in 22 appearances.
