Softball Wins Magic City Classic

Birmingham, Ala. - UAB (15-7) finished first in the Magic City Classic held at Samford University. They played Birmingham Southern (4-21) in the first game and won 2-0. In the next game, the Blazers faced Samford (11-11). The final score was 7-3.

The Blazers put up the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning, 1-0. Sophomore Beth Mullins (Fairhope, Ala.) doubled to right center to lead off the inning. With two outs, senior first baseman Kai Paul (Birmingham, Ala.) hit a double down the right field line to score Mullins.

UAB rallied in the sixth inning to add another run, 2-0. Mullins scored on a single by Paul.

Mullins and Paul each recorded two hits for the Blazers.

The winning pitcher for UAB was senior Megan Stephenson (Washington, Ill.). Stephenson (5-3) worked all seven innings for the Blazers allowing only four hits. Stephenson recorded 10 strikeouts on the day.

The Blazers scored first in the top of the first inning. Mullins scored on a wild pitch by the Samford pitcher, 1-0. Paul doubled to left field to bring in Kelli Thompson (Decatur, Ala.) and Aimee Vaughn (New Orleans, La.), 3-0.

Samford scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning off three hits, 3-2.

The Blazers added another run in the third inning off a home run to right center by Vaughn, 4-2.

Vaughn led off the sixth inning with a walk. Sophomore Amber Rouse (Morris, Ala.), who pinch ran for Vaughn, scored on a home run by freshman Kristin Stanfill (Goodlettsville, Tenn.), 6-2. The home run marked Stanfill's first of her college career.

UAB added one more run for the day when Hithe scored on a single by Thompson, 7-2, in the seventh inning.

 

 

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Bulldogs added a run on two hits, 7-3.

Kerri Foster (6-3) recorded the win for UAB throwing four innings, allowing one run off seven hits. Foster recorded three strikeouts.

Mullins was chosen Most Valuable Player of the 2002 Magic City Classic after going 5-11 with a double and a home run. Mullins also scored four runs and drove in two.

Foster was chosen to the All-Tournament team of the Classic after pitching 12 innings, allowing only one run. Foster also recorded 11 strikeouts.

The Blazers are up next at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader against Lipscomb on Monday.
