BIRMINGHAM - Despite the intermittent rain and wet field , the UAB women's soccer team defeated Houston 3-1 late Friday in Conference USA action at West Campus Field.

With the win, UAB improved its record to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in C-USA, while Houston dropped to 2-8-1 overall and 1-4 in C-USA play.

The Blazers wasted no time getting on the board as freshman midfielder Jenny Rynders (Marietta, Ga.) headed in freshman defender Briana McCarty's (Lawrenceville, Ga.) corner kick at the 2:22 mark of the first half. The goal was Rynders second of the season.

At the 15:41 mark, the Blazers struck again as junior forward Adrienne Suffridge (Columbia, S.C.) scored her fourth goal of the season knocking the ball in off a scramble in front of the net. Freshman forward Tara Kidwell (Leesburg, Va.) and senior forward Denise Peters (Jacksonville, Ala.) were credited with the assists.

The Blazers continued to dominate the first half out shooting the Cougars seven to two. The score would remain 2-0 in favor of the Blazers at the half.

In the 50th minute of play, Houston narrowed its margin as senior midfielder Laura Repp scored on a short chip shot from the front of the net. Senior defender Jennifer Allen garnered the assist.

The Cougars fought hard in the second half out shooting the Blazers seven to three, but it would not be enough as the Blazers scored at the 87:29 mark to clinch the match. Sophomore midfielder Jessica Samulski (Columbia, S.C.) scored an unassisted goal off her own corner kick.

Both teams played an aggressive match as two yellow cards were given to the Cougars and one to the Blazers.

Junior goalkeeper Lisa Nowoslawski (Melbourne, Fla.) had five saves in the win for the Blazers.

The Blazers will finish their three game homestand on Sunday as they take on TCU in a 1 p.m. C-USA match at West Campus Field. The match will precede the UAB men's soccer match against 13th-ranked Furman at 3 p.m.
