Blazers in Fifth After Day One of Inaugural UAB Fall Beach Blast

GULF SHORES, Ala. - The UAB women's golf team is sitting in fifth place after the first day of its inaugural UAB Fall Beach Blast. The two-day event is being held at The Peninsula Golf Course in Gulf Shores, Ala. and is boasting a field of five teams, including host-school UAB, Birmingham-Southern, Marshall, Southern Miss and Mercer. The Panthers of Birmingham-Southern are leading the way with a combined day-one total of 300. Mercer is in second with a score of 328, while Marshall and Southern Miss are third and fourth respectively with totals of 331 and 338. UAB is currently in fifth place with a first-round score of 360. Birmingham-Southern's Sara Hunt was the lone player under par during the first round, shooting a one-under 71 to claim the top spot going into Tuesday's second-and-final round. Sophomore Alyson Mitchell was UAB's top performer on day one with a total of 87. Carolyn Cochran was close behind with an 88 and Jennifer Head shot a 91 during the first round. Martha Hudson finished the day with a total of 94 and Christina Wentworth tallied a 96 through 18 holes. Day two of the tournament will begin on Tuesday morning, with the first tee time at 9:16 a.m.
