UAB Women Hold on For 69-67 Win Over Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Deanna Jackson and Natasha Thomas both recorded double-doubles for the second straight game and third in the last four as UAB held off Charlotte, 69-67 in Conference USA play, Friday night in Bartow Arena.

Jackson scored 18 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in recording her 15th double-double of the season and 46th of her career. Thomas, a freshman, scored 15 points and had 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double.

Mia Thrash led the Lady Blazers in scoring with 19 points. UAB had four players score in double figures for the first time this year as Brandi Stallings added 10 points.

UAB led by 10 points, 65-55 with 3:56 remaining in the game when Charlotte began its rally. The 49ers cut the lead to two-points at 67-65 with 44 seconds remaining. Brandi Stallings hit a lay-up with 24 seconds remaining to give the Lady Blazers a four point lead with 24 seconds remaining.

Charlotte once again cut the lead to two-points when Alicia Abernathy hit a bucket and was fouled with two seconds remaining on the clock. She intentionally missed the free throw, but the ball was knocked out of bounds to UAB. The Lady Blazers successfully inbounded the ball to end the game.

Adrienne Jordan scored 18 points to lead Charlotte. Tonya Phifer scored 12 points and Tonika Smith added 10.

UAB trailed at the half 28-26. It was the sixth time in the last seven games that the Lady Blazers trailed at halftime. Jackson came out and scored the first six points of the second half, putting UAB up 32-28 and they never trailed again.

Both team's shooting performance turned around in the second half. UAB shot 60 percent after shooting just 30 percent in the first half. Charlotte shot 52 percent in the second period after hitting just 35.5 percent in the first half. Both teams shot 43 percent for the game.

 

 

The Lady Blazers outrebounded Charlotte 43-31.

UAB is now 9-1 in Bartow Arena this year. They host Saint Louis, Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
