Men's Soccer Duo Sweeps Conference USA Players Of The Week Awards
Sept. 16, 2002 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- For just the second time in school history, two UAB players have swept Conference Player of the Week honors. Nnamdi Ngwe and Clint Baumstark were named the offensive and defensive Players of the Week, the league office announced Monday. "We are very pleased both players received this honor," said UAB head coach Mike Getman. "Both of them had an outstanding tournament and helped us to the championship." Ngwe helped the Blazers to the Jim 'N Nick's/Puma BSC Fall Classic title with a pair of game-winning goals, his first goals of the season, last weekend. On Friday, the Missouri City, Texas native connected on a shot from 15 yards out to give UAB a 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Western Kentucky. In the championship game on Sunday, 1-0 on the strength of Ngwe's goal in the 60th minute. Nwge also have five shots on the day, including four on goal, scoring the game's only goal in the 60th minute. Baumstark anchored the UAB defense that helped lead the Blazers to the tournament title last weekend. During the two weekend contests, he allowed two goals and made five saves. The only goals against Baumstark came in a 3-2 win over Western Kentucky, with one of them coming off a deflection. In Sunday's match against Navy, he made four stops to secure a 1-0 shutout for his second of the season and moving him into third place in the school record books with 11 career shutouts.
The Blazers will open Conference USA play on the road against rival Saint Louis on Saturday, September, 21, at 7:30 p.m.
