Jeremy Drake Named C-USA Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year
June 12, 2007 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Former UAB men's soccer player Jeremy Drake was awarded as the Conference USA men's soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year, Commissioner Britton Banowsky announced on Tuesday. The C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year awards are presented to the top student-athletes in each conference-sponsored sport. The award is based on academic achievement (GPA), athletic achievement and service. Drake becomes the second Blazer men's soccer player over the past three seasons to earn the league's top academic award. Former UAB forward Lukasz Kwapisz earned the honor during the 2004-05 academic year. Drake, a senior from Birmingham, Ala., played a key role in UAB's run to the 2006 NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament. He played in 13 contests before suffering a season-ending injury prior to the 2006 Conference USA Tournament. He compiled 69 saves on the season and accrued 119 saved during his four-year career at UAB. Drake carried a perfect 4.0 while majoring in biology/pre-medicine at UAB, and intends become an orthopedic surgeon Ten of C-USA's 12 institutions produced at least one scholar athlete winner, with co-winners named in baseball, women's basketball, women's soccer, women's tennis and men's track & field. Rice produced a conference-best five Scholar Athlete Award winners, Tulsa had four winners and SMU had three student-athletes selected.
