Men's Soccer Team Topples AUM, 3-1, In Spring Soccer Action

March 3, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team continued its winning ways during the spring season, improving to 2-0 with a 3-1 win over NAIA powerhouse Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday night. The Blazers received goals from three veteran players en route to the 3-1 victory.

"I thought we played we and I am pleased with the result," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "I thought we were very dangerous all night long and created a bunch of scoring opportunities. AUM was a great opponent because they were ranked No. 1 in NAIA throughout last season and they are an experienced team that has a lot of older players. Overall, I felt it was a very good result against a very good team.

The Blazers jumped to a 3-0 lead against AUM on goals from three different veteran players. The first goal was scored by midfielder Derek Rios. Following Rios' goal was sophomore Booby Chanthongphio, while defender Joe Klosterman finished the scoring for Blazers.

Auburn-Montgomery's lone goal came on a penalty kick with approximately 15 minuted remaining in the contest.

The Blazers will continue their spring slate when they take on the Atlanta Silverbacks on March 25, at 1 p.m. at West Campus Field. UAB will welcome back two former Blazers in Tony McManus and Jason McLaughlin in the contest.
