Brad Smith Tabbed C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week

Sept. 26, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior Brad Smith has been tabbed the Conference USA Men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. The award for Smith marks his first of his two-year UAB career, and the first for a UAB golfer this season.

"This is a very deserving award for Brad," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Brad played great this weekend and almost led us to victory at Shoal Creek. He has certainly put in a lot of hard work and it is good to see that hard work pay off with this honor."

Smith was outstanding in leading the UAB men's golf team to a second-place finish at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 24-25. The senior led his team with a three-under par 213 to share co-medalist honors and capture his first-ever tournament title for the Blazers.

After shooting even par through the opening two rounds, Smith was the hottest player of the final day and entered the final two holes at five-under par for the round. Smith then made a pair of bogeys on holes 17 and 18, which dropped him into a tie for the tournament crown. Smith's finish marks the second consecutive match that the Hawthorne, Australia native led the Blazers.

The event featured 12 participants which were ranked in Golfweek's top 90 at the end of the 2006-07 campaign.

Smith and the Blazers will have another challenging battle in their next tournament when they compete at the Jerry Pate National at Old Overton Golf Course on Oct. 8-9.
