A&M Loses Close One at Pine Bluff, 23-21

Go Bulldogs!!!

Oct. 21, 2006

Final Stats

Pine Bluff, Ark. -

Kelcy Luke's two-point conversion quarterback draw attempt was stuffed at the line of scrimmage with 2:00 to play Saturday, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff held on for a 23-21 victory over the No. 20-ranked Bulldogs.  Luke had given the Bulldogs a chance at tying the game on a seven-yard naked bootleg for a touchdown after trailing by as many as 16 in the fourth quarter.  The Bulldogs' on-side kick attempt failed and the Lions were able to run out the clock for the win.

Alabama A&M had a chance to put distance between themselves and the Lions in the first half, but could not convert three turnovers into any more than seven points.

A tipped ball at the line of scrimmage on the first play of the game was intercepted by A&M's Kevin Lockhart at the Pine Bluff 22-yard-line.  The Bulldogs converted that turnover into a touchdown at the 13:02 mark on a Ta'mar Scott six-yard run.  Scott finished the game with 94 yards on 15 carries.

The next possession for the Bulldogs ended at the goal line as Luke fumbled the snap on a fourth and goal from the one, and Alabama A&M did not capitalize on two more UAPB fumbles, keeping the Lions in the game throughout the first half.

The Lions took advantage.  A 22-yard run by Dedrick Poole tied the game at 12:29 of the second quarter, and a John Heflin 48-yard field goal gave the Lions a 10-7 lead at the intermission.

An A&M miscue to begin the third quarter, a Luke interception, turned into seven more Lion points.  Jason Jones scored four plays after the turnover on a 35-yard completion from Chris Wallace on fourth and nine.  The two would hook up again for a 63-yard scoring play with 12:31 to play.  Heflin missed the extra point, and UAPB led 23-7.

The Alabama A&M comeback bid began with a four-play 44 yard drive as Luke hit Trevis O'Neal on a screen pass that turned into a 48-yard touchdown play.  Luke scored a two-point conversion to cut the lead to eight.
