Beyerle Heads to China For ISSF World Cup Competition
FAIRBANKS, AK – University of Alaska Fairbanks senior Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, PA) is one of three women that will represent USA Shooting at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Guangzhou in Rifle and Pistol in Guangzhou, China, March 25-April 2.
The World Cup match in China is the first of four matches leading up to the World Championships. The World Cup will make its way to Resende, Brazil, April 25-May 3, Munich, Germany, May 22-29, and Milan, Italy, May 29-June 5. The 49th ISSF World Shooting Championships are scheduled for July 21-August 5 in Zagreb, Croatia.
The shooters competing at the World Cup matches in China and Brazil were chosen based on performances earlier this year. However team representatives for the matches in Germany and Italy are reserved for those who make the World Championship team.
Shooters representing Team USA at the World Championships will be determined at the USA Shooting Spring Selection Match that Beyerle and junior Matthew Rawlings (Wharton, TX) will take part in, April 11-22 in Ft. Benning, GA. The top-three shooters in the three-position smallbore, air rifle and prone events will make the team. No more than nine shooters can qualify for the World Championships, but the number will decrease if an individual places in the top-three in more than one event.
Freshman Christian Lejon (Umea, Sweden) will also make the trip to Ft. Benning for the Spring Selection Match where his scores will be reported back to his native Sweden as he attempts to qualify for the Swedish national team and a place at the World Championships. Lejon will represent Sweden and compete at the match in Brazil.
Rawlings was given the option to shoot at both the China and Brazil World Cup matches, but due to academic responsibilities, will only compete in the Brazil match.
Throughout the World Cup matches, shooters will earn points towards qualifying for the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. One of the two spots on both the men's and women's team will be determined by points. The other spot will be awarded based on a shooter's performance at events leading up to the games.
Unlike NCAA rifle matches, men and women do not compete against each other in international competition. Rawlings and Beyerle both have years of experience on the U.S. national team and are favored to earn a spot on Team USA's roster for the World Championships.
Beyerle, the 2006 NCAA smallbore champion and air rifle runner-up, has been training at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO since the conclusion of the NCAA rifle championships on Mar. 11. In addition Beyerle and Rawlings were named NRA first-team All-Americans in both the smallbore and air rifle as the Nanooks won the program's eighth NCAA national championship to cap a perfect 12-0 season. Lejon was named a first team All-American in the smallbore and a second team All-American in air rifle.
Since moving into the Olympic Training Center, Beyerle's daily training regimen has consisted of four hours of shooting and one hour of physical training.
