Oct. 7, 2004 Garden City, N.Y. - For the third straight year the Adelphi University softball team is listed among the top ten Division II schools in the nation for highest grade point average as ranked by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). The team combined for a 3.460 grade point average to finish fourth overall, their highest ranking to date. "It's very exciting to be recognized," said Head Coach Kate Whalen. "It's indicative of how much the players care about their academics and we can say we have true student-athletes." A total of nine players on the 2004 softball team received NFCA All-Academic individual honors for maintaining a 3.5 or better (on a 4.0 scale) grade point average. Leading the way was three-time scholar athlete senior Naomi Lerner. Joining her are Laura Cappolla, Sheila Feldman, Ivy Klein, Theresa Kotulak, Tara, Rice, Christina Semey, Ashley Spreer and Katie Terris. The 2004 Panthers (27-21) finished third in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) regular season and were participants in the ECAC Championships. This is the third season the Panthers have been recognized for their academic accomplishments and its highest ranking to date. In 2002 the team ranked sixth overall in grade point average and ninth in 2003. The team winners are based on cumulative team grade point averages submitted by NFCA member head coaches for the academic year. Top 10 winners are recognized in five college categories (NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior colleges) and two high school divisions.
