April 30, 2004 Brookville, N.Y. - Six members of the Adelphi University Softball team were selected to the NYCAC All-Conference team. Junior outfielder Ivy Klein was selected first-team All-NYCAC, while juniors Theresa Kotulak and Tonia Trapani, along with sophomores Carla Buonviaggio, Beth Fletcher and Amy Delmore were named to the second-team. For the third consecutive year, a C.W. Post player was named NYCAC Softball Player of the Year as junior catcher Krystle Scala was chosen in balloting by coaches.Scala, who was also tabbed as a First Team All-NYCAC selection at catcher for the third straight season, follows in the footsteps of former teammate Julianne Lovejoy, who was chosen for the conference's top award in both 2002 & 2003. Other top winners included last year's Rookie of the Year, New Haven pitcher Elina Colon, who was named the conference's Pitcher of the Year, and was also chosen for First Team accolades. Freshman Jackie Rogers of Dowling succeeds Colon as the NYCAC's top Rookie, while Philadelphia University outfielder Brianne Bertelsen was tabbed as the conference's Academic Player of the Year, and earned a Second Team All-Conference selection. Bridgeport head coach Valerie Steen was named NYCAC Coach of the Year, in recognition of an outstanding first-year effort that saw her help double the team's victory total from 2003 and lead her team to a NYCAC Tournament berth. Adelphi led all teams with six selections to the teams, led by Klein, who grabbed First Team honors. C.W. Post, New Haven and Dowling all followed with three selections apiece, while Bridgeport and Queens garnered two slots and Philadelphia one. A total of 14 players earned their first-ever All-Conference award, with two others, Colon and Klein, moving up from Second to First Team. Jessica Blake captured a Second Team spot after having won Rookie of the Year in 2001. Scala and Wilson are the only players to repeat as First Team choices, while Adelphi's Trapani reprises her Second Team selection for the third straight year. Both First Team middle infielders, Queens' Crystal Wilson and C.W. Post's Toni Neenan, displayed their versatility this season by winning at new positions: Wilson was a First Team choice at shortstop the previous two years, while Neenan won at second base in 2002. Rogers' choice as top newcomer could prove to be a good omen for the freshman since each of the last three Rookie of the Year Selections (Blake-2001, Wilson-2002 and Colon-2003) all earned spots on this year's squad.
