Garden City, N.Y. - .- The Adelphi University softball team swept St. Thomas Aquinas, 4-0, 3-1 in its season home-opener this Sunday afternoon. The Panthers improve to 6-7-1 on the season and 2-0-1 in the NYCAC. The Spartans fall to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in the NYCAC.

Game 1-- Both teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, when the Panthers picked up two runs. Junior Tonia Trapani singled to centerfield before advancing on an error. Sophomore Amy Delmore's base hit brought home Trapani for the RBI. Sophomore Beth Fletcher also scored on an error. Freshman Sheila Feldman gets the shutout, allowing six hits, no runs, one walk and five strikeouts.

Adelphi had three runs on six hits and two errors. St. Thomas Aquinas had no runs on six hits and three errors.

Game 2-- Adelphi jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. Junior Tara Rice hit a double bringing home two runners in the first inning. In the second inning, a single by junior Ivy Klein brought home Feldman, who had advanced to second on a walk and then a passed ball. The Spartans finally got on board in the top of the sixth inning. With bases loaded, senior Shannon Westervelt walked, allowing junior Jamie Gemeinhardt to score. The Panthers kept STAC scoreless for the remainder of the inning, taking the game, 3-1. Senior Jamie Pietrantoni was the winning pitcher for Adelphi, allowing five hits, one run and six strikeouts.

Adelphi had three runs on six hits and no errors. STAC had one run on five hits and one error.

The Panthers return to conference action on Wednesday, March 31, traveling to New Haven. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
