East Rutherford, N.J. -

Adelphi University senior Wayne Nelson was named the NIT/Met Basketball Writer's Association Division II Male Player of the Year in a ceremony held last night at the Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, N.J. Nelson helped the Panthers (23-8) to an NYCAC Championship and the team's ninth straight NCAA appearance.

A 6-4 forward from Absecon, N.J., Nelson finished his Adelphi career as the school's third all-time leading scorer with 1,619 points. He also ranks first in three-point field goals attempts and three-point field made. This year, he led the team in both scoring (19.1 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg) and was 31st in the nation in free-throw percentage (86.6 %). He was named NYCAC Tournament MVP and was also a first-team all-conference selection. In addition, he earned second-team Daktronics DII All-Region, second team NABC All-Region and a second-team ECAC All-Star.

This is the second straight year Adelphi has walked away with top Division II honors. In 2002, former teammate Eddie Williams was named the NIT/All-Met Player of the Year.
