March 25, 2003 Overland Park, Kan. - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced on Friday, March 21, the NABC Division II All-District Teams recognizing the country's best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes. Three members of the NYCAC, including senior Wayne Nelson, were named to the Northeast Region All-District Team. Joining Nelson are junior Gordon James (University of Bridgeport) and sophomore Patrick Tunstead (NYIT) who each earned second-team honors. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finiest basketball players across the country. The 80 student-athletes, from eight districts, are now eligible for the NABC Division II All-American Team to be announced at the conclusion of the 2002-03 NCAA men's basketball season. Nelson, a 6-4 forward from Abescon, N.J., was voted the NYCAC Tournament MVP after leading the Panthers to its fourth conference championship. Named first-team All-NYCAC and second-team Daktronnics DII All-Region, he ranked second in the league in scoring, finishing his Adelphi career as its third all-time leading scorer with 1,619 points. Adelphi (28-9) advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regionals for the ninth consecutive season. James, named the NYCAC Player of the Year and a Daktronics DII first-team All-Region selection, helped the Purple Knights to its most successful season in recent history. Bridgeport (23-8) advanced to the second round of the NCAA Northeast Regionals, before falling to eventual tournament champions UMass-Lowell. The 6-6 forward from Brooklyn, N.Y., led the conference and the nation in rebounding (12.6 rpg). Tunstead, a 6-5 native of Syndey, Australia, averaged 18.9 points and 5.3 rebounds, while leading the Bears to a 17-11 record and the sixth seed in the NYCAC Tournament. Tunstead, also named first-team all-conference and to the Daktronics DII All-Region second team, led the conference in scoring.
