Garcen City, N.Y. - Junior guard Thomas McCormack led Adelphi with 10 points and 11 rebounds as the Adelphi men's basketball team topped conference rival Southampton, 73-68. This win is the Panthers third straight. Adelphi improves to 6-5 on the season and 5-3 in the NYCAC. The Colonials fall to 5-5 on the season and 5-3 in the NYCAC. The Panthers once again had a balanced scoring attack with four different players scoring in double digits. Adelphi was led by senior forward Wayne Nelson with 19 points and five rebounds, senior guard Sherman Whittenburg with 12 points and five rebounds, senior guard Tony Kellman with 10 points and six rebounds and junior guard Thomas McCormack with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Adelphi opened the game with a jumper by Thomas McCormack on an assist from Wayne Nelson to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead. The Colonials countered with a lay-up by Jye Watson to tie the score at two all. The scoring by both teams continued and with 16:18 remaining the score once again was tied at 10. With Adelphi ahead, 23-22 at the 5:56 mark, the Panthers had five consecutive foul calls in less than a minute to allow the Colonials to go ahead 30-23 with 4:20 remaining in the first half. A pressing defense by Adelphi and free-throws by Nelson and McCormack helped the Panthers inch back to go into halftime down 31-35. The second half was opened by Adelphi's three seniors, Nelson, Kellman and Whittenburg scoring to tie the game at 37, with 16:50 remaining in the game. With both teams scoring on a consistent basis the score remained within eight points for the rest of the contest. Two free-throws by Colonial guard Jye Watson tied the score at 64 with 3:16 remaining in the game. Junior guard Thomas McCormack drove strong to the basket to score and get the foul to put the Panthers ahead 67-64 with 2:53 left in the game. The Colonials Watson once again countered getting fouled and making two three-throws to close the score to 71-68. The game was finally put away when senior Wayne Nelson made to clutch free-throws with 18 seconds remaining to put Adelphi in front 73-68. The game was close throughout with 10 lead changes and seven ties. Bench play for both teams was strong with both benches respectively scoring 18 points. Adelphi did lead in free-throw percentage shooting 80.6 percent from the line while Southampton shot 61.3 percent. The Panthers also had a slight edge in rebounds grabbing 43 boards while the Colonials grabbed 38. Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, January 16, traveling to conference nemesis Molloy. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m. |
