Adelphi Panthers Make Move To New Conference

Dec. 16, 2007

Garden City, N.Y. - Adelphi University announced today that it has accepted an invitation to join the NCAA Division II Northeast-10 (NE-10) Conference. The move, from its current East Coast Conference (ECC), is scheduled for September 2009. This decision reflects the University's continued commitment to its student-athletes, recent successes in its current conference, and the growing regional reputation of the University.

"Given the major investments our Board of Trustees has made in facilities for intercollegiate sports, intramurals, and recreation, we believe that this change in conference will better serve our students who are increasingly coming to Adelphi from across the region and will allow us to engage more alumni in our programming," said Dr. Robert A. Scott, president of Adelphi University.

Associate Dean and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Robert Hartwell added that the move will also better position the Panthers for post-season play. "Our teams do very well in the post-season and this move offers them a better shot at championship bids-a goal of our players and coaches alike,'' he added.

Adelphi University has 21 men's and women's teams competing at the highest level of intercollegiate competition. In the last several years, the Panthers have been awarded the ECC Commissioner's Cup multiple times and have won national championship titles in both men's and women's lacrosse. Since its inception, the Panther program has been dedicated to the development of student-athletes at the highest level. Panthers often lead their conferences in accolades for academic accomplishments earning the highest team GPAs and national student-athlete recognitions. The Panther athletic program embodies a commitment to intelligence, humility, strength, success, tradition, pride, and community service.
