The 2005-06 women's tennis team at NC State had an outstanding season, advancing to the NCAA Tournament and winning the first NCAA Tournament game in school history. The Wolfpack won 17 games, a school record, and finished No. 31 in the final ITA rankings. With the senior leadership of Nandita Chandrasekar and Barbara Orlay and the youthful talent of All-ACC and Academic All-ACC Shona Lee, the squad earned the ACC Sportsmanship Award by a vote of its league peers and the conference office.

The ACC has made a strong statement in regards to sportsmanship around the league, and honors one team from each sport to earn the sportsmanship award during the season. Teams receiving the award have conducted themselves with a high degree of character and good sportsmanship, as determined by a vote of the league's players and coaches.

The conference presents sportsmanship awards for each of its 25 sponsored sports. For the second time in the three-year existence of the award, every ACC school was honored as a sportsmanship award winner at least once during the 2005-06 season.

The concept of these awards was created by the ACC Student Athlete Advisory Committee in an effort to recognize teams who earned the utmost regard from their peers during competition. As is stated in the conference's Mission Statement, "It [the ACC] strongly adheres to the principles of integrity and sportsmanship, and supports the total development of the student-athlete and each member institution's athletics department staff, with the intent of producing enlightened leadership for tomorrow."
