CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Showing incredible improvement over last year, the North Carolina women's tennis team learned Monday afternoon that it has earned the fourth seed in the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Tournament, which will be played this weekend in Norcross, Ga.

Under the leadership of Head Coach Roland Thornqvist the Tar Heels finished the regular-season with a 14-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the ACC. Carolina earned the #4 seed in the ACC Tournament and will play fifth-seeded Maryland on Friday, April 23 at 6 p.m. in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. The tournament is scheduled for April 22-25 at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga.

Both North Carolina and Maryland finished the ACC with 4-4 records. UNC earned the #4 seed and Maryland the #5 seed because the Tar Heels defeated the Terrapins 5-4 in head-to-head action in Chapel Hill on April 10.

Carolina improved its seed in the tournament by five spots this year over the 1998 season. The Tar Heels were the #9 seed in last year's tournament and lost in the play-in match.

The winner of the UNC-Maryland quarterfinal match will play in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m. against either Duke, Georgia Tech or N.C. State. Those teams are in the other half of the Tar Heels' mini-bracket.

The championship match of the ACC Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, April 25 at 12 noon.
