![]() Tech Softball Splits With Furman February 14, 1999 GREENVILLE, S.C. - Georgia Tech's softball team evened its record at 2-2 for the season after spliting a non-conference doubleheader with Furman Sunday at Varsity Field. The Paladins (1-3) took the first game 1-0, while Tech rolled to a second-game victory 8-1. In the second game of the afternoon, Jackets' pitcher Jamie Smith (1-1) surrendered just two hits to notch her first win of the year with a complete-game victory. She carried a no-hit bid into the fifth inning before giving up the two hits. She escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fifth by inducing a pair of ground outs back to the mound. Smith allowed just one unearned run, which was scored off of a Tech throwing errow in the third inning. Tech's offense came to life by totaling eight runs and 11 hits with catcher Lacey Schanz leading the way with three hits and two RBI. Center fielder Lauren Schwartz and right fielder Kori Jacobson each contributed two hits and two RBI, while left fielder Heather Sumrow accounted for three runs scored, two hits and an RBI from the leadoff spot. In the first game, Paladin Ashley Rayl pitched a complete game shutout, scattering four hits and striking out four to earn her first win of the season. Second baseman Saskia Gazenbeek scored the lone Paladin run in the third inning after reaching base on a double and scoring on third baseman Erin Keen's single. Tech failed to score after loading the bases in the first inning and advancing runners to second base in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings. The Jackets' open their home season Wednesday by welcoming Virginia Tech for a doubleheader at Glenn Field at 2 p.m.
