The University of Virginia women's lacrosse team continued to receive honors as five players were selected to the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-Regional teams, sponsored by Brine. Lauren Aumiller (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep), Tiffany Schummer (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's), and Gina Sambus (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) were all selected to the first team while Amy Appelt (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) and Molly Cangemi (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Prep) were named to the second team.

Third-year center Lauren Aumiller had one of the most incredible seasons in the history of Virginia and ACC women's lacrosse. She is the only player in the nation to rank in the top ten nationally in goals per game, assists per game, & draw controls and led the ACC by a wide margin in these categories. There have only been five seasons in the history of all players at all ACC schools in which a player has notched more points than Aumiller in a single season.

Aumiller led the ACC by a wide margin in goals, assists and attacks- She was the only player in the ACC this season to score a hat trick in every ACC game this year is currently riding a nineteen-game scoring streak. She notched a hat trick in thirteen of UVA's 19 games this year alone and notched three assists or more in a game five times in 2002. She was honored as the Warrior/insidelacrosse.com "National Player of the Week" for her play against Loyola and Vanderbilt in which she had two seven-point games and had seven draw controls.

Aumiller is a member of the USA National Developmental Team as well as the captain of the USA Under-19 team that won the world title in 1999. A 2001 All-American, Aumiller already ranks third in scoring at Virginia with 220 career points and she is second in goals with 153 and third in assists with 67. Aumiller owns the record for scoring as a second year and a third year, and this year set the record at Virginia for goals in a season with 71. She is only the 13th person in the history of Division I intercollegiate lacrosse to have more than 70 goals in a season and the 11th person to have more than 105 points in a single season.

Aumiller led the nation with 106 points and 71 goals, and ranked third in nation for assists (35). She ranked second in the nation in points per game (5.58), ranks sixth nationally for draws (50) and is 13th nationally with 2.63 dcpg.

Co-captain and line defender Tiffany Schummer was named to the 2002 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. She ranked nationally in caused turnovers and was third overall in the ACC in that statistic, causing 2.11 per game.

Schummer closed out the 2002 campaign with 40 caused turnovers and 61 ground balls. The 40 caused turnovers ranks fifth all-time for a single season in Virginia history and she also now ranks sixth all-time in career caused turnovers. She was one of only two players in the ACC to rank in the top-three in both ground balls and caused turnovers.

Schummer was honored nationally as the Warrior/insidelacrosse.com "National Player of the Week" after leading the Cavaliers to an 11-8 upset of the UNC Tar Heels. In that game Schummer had five caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Co-captain and fourth-year Gina Sambus led the ACC in both ground balls (84) and caused turnovers (44) and was one of only five players to rank in the top-20 nationally in both catagories. Sambus, a 2002 All-Conference selection, ranked sixth on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 10 assists, both career highs.

Sambus, a member of the USA National Squad, became just the second person in school history to record 100 caused turnovers in a career and ranks second all-time in school history in that statistic. Her 44 this season ranks fourth all-time for a single year in Virginia history and her 84 ground balls is the sixth-highest single-season total in school history.

Appelt was the only freshman to be named to an All-American team in 2002. The 2002 ACC Rookie of the Year, Appelt led the nation's freshmen in scoring by a wide margin, scoring 53 goals and adding 21 assists. She ranked 15th nationally among all players in scoring and bested the old Virginia record for scoring as a first-year by 15 points. Appelt had a hat trick in 10 of Virginia's 19 games and set a first-year record with five assists in a game (vs ODU). In addition, Appelt has scored in every game in her collegiate career and with Aumiller, owns the longest consecutive-game scoring streak in school history for a single season.

Cangemi was an All-ACC selection and became just the fifth person in school history to record 20 goals, 20 ground balls, and 20 caused turnovers in the same season. She ranked fourth on the team in scoring and third in caused turnovers.
