![]() Fourth-Ranked Duke Drops Regular Season Finale To No. 8 Dartmouth, 9-7

The Duke University women's lacrosse team fell 13-4 on the season with a 9-7 loss to eighth-ranked Dartmouth on Sunday at Koskinen Stadium. Freshman Katie Chrest led the fourth-ranked Blue Devils with four goals, establishing a new Duke freshman scoring record with 38 goals this season. Dartmouth jumped out to an early 1-0 lead just over a minute into the contest when Elizabeth Right collected a free position goal. Chrest answered with 2:56 gone by in the contest for a 1-1 tie. The Big Green tallied the next three goals as Whitney Jamison collected assists on all three. Casey Hazel delivered the first at 4:03 and Lana Smith added goals at 8:39 and 11:05 for a 4-1 Dartmouth advantage. Chrest split through a pair Dartmouth defenders to register her second goal of the day at the 13:06 mark, narrowing the deficit to 4-2. The Big Green added goals by Molly Jenkins and Hazel over the remaining 17 minutes, while withstanding a Duke offense that had several shots sail wide of goal and a couple of more bounce off the goal post, to take a 6-2 halftime lead. Just over two minutes into the second half, Smith extended the lead to 7-2 off a free position shot. A free position goal by Katieanne Christian at 38:16 pushed the advantage to 8-2 in favor of the Big Green. Duke responded with three goals in a two minutes and 16 second span. Senior Jessica Bennett starting the run at 40:43 with a free position goal. Kate Kaiser collected her first goal of the day 33 seconds later to narrow the gap to 8-4. Chrest scored off a pass from Lauren Gallagher at 42:57 for her third goal of the day, becoming the top goal scoring freshman in Duke history on the play. Kelly Dirks established the previous freshman record of 36 goals during the 1999 season. Jamison's free position goal at 47:27 extended the Dartmouth lead to four goals at 9-5. Duke closed the gap to 9-7 the final eight minutes with Chrest's fourth goal of the day and a free position goal from Kaiser in the final minute. For the game, Duke out shot the visitors, 37-28, while converting on just 2 of 13 free position shots. The Blue Devils also collected 36 ground balls. Dartmouth goalie Devon Wills had an outstanding day in goal stopping 12 shots while watching several others sail just wide of goal. Wills also benefited from four Blue Devil shots that bounced off the cage posts. Duke finishes the regular season with a 13-4 mark, including a 7-1 mark at home. Dartmouth concludes its regular season 10-4 overall. Both teams find out their NCAA Championship fate this evening, with the 2003 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship selection show beginning at 8:00 p.m.
