![]() Hannemann Wins 2001 Honda Award for Women's Golf
May 29, 2001 DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke University junior Candy Hannemann has been selected the winner of the 2001 Honda Award for women's golf. The Honda Award recognizes the top woman collegiate athlete in each of 12 Division I sports with all 12 becoming candidates for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year to receive the Honda-Broderick Cup. Hannemann, a Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native, is coming off winning the 2001 NCAA Individual title in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. at the NCAA Championships. She will be playing in the U.S. Women's Open from May 31-June 3 at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club in Southern Pines, N.C. It marks the second time Hannemann has played in the U.S. Open as she didn't make the cut in 1998. During the season, Hannemann led Duke to a school-record nine tournament victories and notched a team-best 72.88 stroke average. She tallied two tournament victories, two tied for first finishes, seven top five, and 10 top 10 finishes during the 2000-01 season. Hannemann led Duke with 15 rounds of even or under par. Other nominees for the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year are-- Jen Adams (Maryland, lacrosse), Mohini Bhardwaj (UCLA, gymnastics), Greichaly Cepero (Nebraska, volleyball), Miarina DiGiacomo (Old Dominion, Field Hockey), Jennie Finch (Arizona softball), Meredith Florance (North Carolina, soccer), Laura Granville (Stanford, Tennis), Kara Grgas-Wheeler (Colorado, cross country), Misty Hyman (Stanford, swimming), Jackie Stiles (Southwest Missouri State, basketball), and Brenda Taylor (Harvard, track & field). Hannemann becomes Duke's second women's athlete to receive the Honda Award as Vanessa Webb received the tennis award in 1999.
The Honda Awards banquet will be held on June 11, 2001 during the annual
NACDA convention. The College Women Athlete of the Year Banquet will be
held at the Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah.
