COLUMBUS, OHIO - Senior Marcy Newton fired a five-under-par 67, the low round of her collegiate career, in the first round of the NCAA East Regional to lead the Tar Heels to a tie for sixth place after the first day. Purdue leads the field of 21 teams after firing a 295 total. Four teams are tied for second place four shots back at 299 - Ohio State, Northwestern, Central Florida and Michigan while four teams are tied for sixth at 300 - North Carolina, Duke, Florida and Tennessee. The Tar Heels look to keep up their pace through Saturday's final round as the top 11 teams and top three individuals (not on those teams) advance on to the NCAA Championships in Sunriver, Ore.

Newton, from High Point, N.C., holds a one-stroke lead over Kari Damron who carded a four-under 68. Kasey Gant of Michigan State posted a 70 while Auburn's Celestr Troche shot 71 and Ohio State's Lisa Strom and Northwestern's Elizabeth Burden shot 72.

Another Tar Heel is also in the top 10 individually as Heather Angell is tied for seventh place after carding a 73. Abby Spector is tied for 66th place with a 78 while Beth Lever is tied for 107th at 82 and Britta Olson is tied for 121st at 85.

The 54-hole event is being played at the University Scarlet Course at Ohio State which features a par 72, 6,037-yard layout. The tournament concludes Saturday.
