BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. - Led by individual champion Jenny Chuasiriporn, the Duke women's golf team won the rain-shortended Lady Gamecock Classic. Sunday's final round of play was canceled due to rain.

Through 36 holes, Duke was first at 581, UNC was fifth at 616, Wake Forest was tied for 11th at 637 and Florida State was 15th at 650.

The event was played at the 5,996-yard, par-72, University Club in Blythewood, SC.

Chuasiriporn of Duke distanced herself from the rest of the field after firing rounds of 66-70 for an eight-under-par 136 total. Carolina's Marcy Newton was 10 shots back in second place with a 146 total. Emma Lofgren of South Carolina was third at 147 while two Duke players tied for fourth place with 148 totals, Beth Bauer and Kalen Anderson.

For the remainder of the Tar Heel lineup, Heather Angell tied for 17th place with a 153 total. Shelley McKevitt tied for 39th place at 158 while Cuyler Buckles was in 59th place at 165 and Beth Lever tied for 60th with a 166 total.
 

 

The Demon Deacons recorded a team round of 321 on Saturday and finished at 316-321=637.

Sophomore Marta Prieto (Sevilla, Spain) led the Deacon individuals in the event after she carded a 77 on Saturday to stand at 12-over-par, 79-77=156, and finish among four players in 24th place. Right behind Prieto was junior Kelly Kirwin (Grand Rapids, MN), who was one of 11 players tied for 28th place at 79-78=157.

Senior Kristen Wagner (Martinsville, IN) finished only one shot behind Kirwin in a three-way tie for 39th place at 78-80=158. Rounding out the Deacon contingent in the field was freshman Nicole Faniola (Old Lyme, CT), who tied for 60th place at 80-86=166. The final Wake Forest competitor, freshman Katie Brenny (Little Falls, MN), withdrew in the first round of play.

The Demon Deacons will be back in action next weekend when they compete in the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan Park Champions Golf Course in Browns Summit, NC. Wake Forest will be co-hosting the event with UNC Greensboro.
