Carla Tagliente, a member of the national champion University of Maryland women's field hockey team, was named Friday to the GTE All-District II women's Fall/Winter At Large Academic All-America team.
Tagliente, a junior from Cortland, N.Y., is now eligible to be named to the national team that will be announced on April 20.
Tagliente has a 3.97 grade point average while majoring in mechanical engineering. She was named a national Academic All-American last year. Earlier this year she was named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association's Academic team. In addition, she has been named to the ACC honor roll and University of Maryland Director of Athletics honor roll twice during her career.
On the field last season, Tagliente was an All-America first-team and All-ACC selection as she helped lead the Terps to the 1999 NCAA Division I national championship. She ranked third on the team in scoring with 18 goals and 19 assists for 57 points. Tagliente enters her senior season ranked in the top six in three major offensive categories: third in goals (54), fourth in total points (139) and sixth in assists (31).
