June 12, 2000

The UNC rowing program will host three Nike camps, intended for a wide range of skill levels, in July.

Session I: July 10-14
A coed camp for boys and girls ages 14-18, this session is for beginners who want to jump-start their rowing careers with concentrated work on the foundations. We welcome the "cross-over" athlete*those who have played other sports and want to start rowing.

Session II: July 15-19
A coed camp for boys and girls ages 14-18, this session encompasses two skill levels.
Nike II level, "Maximizing Your Contribution", is for rowers who compete (or want to compete) on a high school or club team. We will develop your stroke technique, strength and endurance, and maximize your contributions to the boat. One season of rowing is required.
Nike III level, "The High Potential Rower", is for the seasoned athlete with the drive and ability to row on a college team. This is an intense and challenge program developing technique, physical conditioning, mental discipline and commitment to competitive achievement. Campers on this level must be able to row an eight-minute or better pace for 2,000 meters on the ergometer. A coach's letter of recommendation is required.

Session III: July 19-23
A camp for girls only, ages 14-18, this session encompasses two skill levels: Nike II and Nike III. (See above for descriptions.)

The programs will include rowing and a brief introduction to sculling instruction. Rowers and coxswains will use two-way radios to aid in training, and will be videotaped daily. Campers will have the option of receiving a compiled video of their own rowing.

On shore, campers will stay in air-conditioning Granville Towers, adjacent to campus and close to the UNC boathouse. Amenities include cable television in the lounges and a swimming pool.

The cost for the camp is $555 for resident campers and $455 for extended day campers. The resident camper fee includes housing and all meals. Extended day fee includes
