![]() All Three Virginia Boats Advance To The Semifinals At The NCAA Rowing Championships
May 31, 2002 INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - All three University of Virginia boats advanced to the semifinals at the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships on Friday (May 31) at Eagle Creek Reservoir. Virginia's first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four crews all advanced to Saturday's (June 1) semifinals after preliminary heats on Friday. The championships continue through Sunday (June 2). UVa's first varsity eight finished third in its heat with a time of 6:54.90. Washington won the heat with a time of 6:47.20 followed by Harvard (6:54.20) and Virginia. Syracuse finished fourth in the heat with a time of 6:55.70 followed by Washington State (6:56.30) and Michigan State (7:03.30). The Cavaliers' first varsity eight was comprised of coxswain Sarah Brennan, Kelley Dougherty, Meg Van Dam, Catelyn Coyle, Lauren Mitterer, Molly Baker, Madeline Engel, Jennifer Reck and Amanda Kennedy. Virginia's second varsity eight was second in its heat with a time of 7:13.93. Brown won the heat with a time of 7:10.45 followed by Virginia, Princeton (7:16.80), Michigan State (7:17.55) and California-Berkeley (7:21.69). UVa's second varsity eight was made up of coxswain Betty Shumaker, Hayley Nunn, Tammy Clark, Claudia Durkin, Julie McQueen, Genevieve Cauchon-Voyer, Carolyn McMillan, Risa Mandzuk and Emily Richard. The Cavaliers' varsity four was second in its heat with a time of 8:07.66. Brown won the heat with a time of 8:02.78 followed by Virginia, Yale (8:10.59), Michigan (8:13.63), Princeton (8:13.76) and Syracuse (8:35.45). Virginia's varsity four was comprised of coxswain Lauren Richards, Katie Yrazabal, Kelley Jesnig, Mary Dobmeier and Jessica Busch.
UVa has finished in the top seven in the team competition at each of the five previous NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The Cavaliers finished fourth in 1997, third in 1998, second in 1999, third in 2000 and seventh in 2001.
