Tar Heels Begin NCAA Tournament Play Saturday

Head Coach: Sam Paul 149-89 overall at UNC (56-25 in ACC regular season matches), 10th year Carolina's Men's Tennis Highlights/Notes o Carolina has now been invited to the team championships of the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and the 11th time in the last 12 years. The only year in that span the Tar Heels did not make the tournament was 1999 when they were 11-14. Carolina also made the Team Tournament in both 1977 and 1978. Prior to 1977, the NCAA Tournament was a flighted championship. The Tar Heels are 7-12 in dual matches in the NCAA Team Tournament. o Senior Trystan Meniane received an invitation to play in the singles portion of the NCAA Tournament. This is the 14th time since 1990 that a UNC player has been invited to the singles phase. UNC's doubles team of Meniane and junior Nicholas Monroe also received a bid. They are the first Carolina doubles team invited since 1996 when David Caldwell and Brint Morrow were invited. o Carolina has an all-time record of 24-16 since the ACC Tournament went from a flighted format to a team format in 1986. UNC is 1-0 in opening round matches, 10-7 in quarterfinal matches, 8-2 in semifinals and 3-5 in championship matches. UNC was also 2-2 in consolation matches in 1986, 1987 and 1989. There was no tournament in 1987. o Nicholas Monroe, Trystan Meniane and Derek Porter were named to the 2003 All-Atlantic Coast Conference team. Monroe was named to the team for the second succesive year while Meniane and Porter are first time All-ACC honorees. o UNC won the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference title, marking Carolina's 25th title and the first crown since 1992. Both the men's and women's teams won ACC titles last season, the second double ACC title for Carolina and first since the 1977-78 school year. o Marcio Petrone was named the ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2002. o The Heels finished with a 3-5 regular-season ACC record. The Tar Heels played in tough luck during the season as three of their five losses came by 4-3 scores, another by 4-2 and the fifth by 5-2. UNC has had a winning record in the ACC 13 of the last 15 years. o The Atlantic Coast Conference this season has been one of the most competitive and outstanding conferences in the nation. The ACC is tied for second for the most teams ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Top 50 rankings going into the NCAA Tournament with seven. The Southeastern Conference has 11 teams ranked followed by the Pac 10 and ACC with seven and then the Big 10 and Big 12 with four each. Six ACC teams earned NCAA bids. o Carolina finished tied for sixth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in the regular season standings with Georgia Tech. The Heels have finished either first, second or third in the ACC regular season standings in 13 of the past 15 years. o After a solid 7-2 start to the 2003 season, the Tar Heels hit a rough spell with seven successive losses with six of the seven setbacks having the opponents score only four team points. UNC rebounded to win four of its last six matches with an upset of #30 Virginia and a tight 4-3 loss to #9 Duke. o All 11 Tar Heel losses have been to nationally-ranked foes. o Carolina played 14 of its 22 dual matches this year against nationally-ranked teams. o Sam Paul is now in his 14th season at North Carolina. He came to Chapel Hill as an assistant coach in 1989 and became head coach in 1993. His career record as head coach is 149-89 including 56-25 in ACC regular season matches. o Junior Nicholas Monroe has won eight straight dual matches heading into the NCAA Tournament. Four of those eight wins are over nationally-ranked opponents. o Trystan Meniane and Nicholas Monroe have combined for a record of 28-11 at the top two singles flights in the dual match season. UNC has best combined record at No. 1 and No. 2 in the league this year with a mark of 14-2 in ACC matches. o In 11 of the past 13 years, Carolina's #1 singles player has earned All-America honors and/or participated in the singles phase of the NCAA Championships. o UNC junior Ben Aiken ranks as one of the top student-athletes at Carolina. He recently received the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete for men's tennis. o Seniors Greg Archer and Trystan Meniane serve as co-captains of the 2003 Tar Heels. o Senior Greg Archer won the 50th doubles match of his career against NC State on April 13. Trystan Meniane won the 90th singles match of his career in first round ACC tourney win over NC State. o Daniel Pinchbeck was named ACC Player of the Week February 3 after helping lead the Tar Heels to wins over Princeton and Georgia with two key singles victories including the clincher versus Princeton. o Trystan Meniane captyured his 90th career victory against NC State April 17. Two other Tar Heels have passed the 60-win plateau in their careers this season. Andrew Metzler had 69 singles wins and Nicholas Monroe has 64. Three Tar Heels have at least 20 wins this year. Metzler has 24 and Monroe and Meniane both have 23. o UNC was 14-7 at No. 1 singles, 16-4 at No. 2 singles and 11-8 at No. 5 singles in the dual match season. o Since 1990, UNC has a 107-38 record against opponents from the ACC including matches played in the regular season, ACC Tournament and NCAA Tournament. During that time UNC is 14-7 against Clemson, 6-14 against Duke, 14-3 against Florida State, 16-5 against Georgia Tech, 15-1 against Maryland, 18-0 against NC State, 12-5 against Virginia and 12-3 against Wake Forest. o UNC has achieved a national ranking in the Top 30 at some point in the season in 13 of the last 14 years. Carolina's highest ranking this year was 13th on both March 5 and 12. o The Tar Heels have won 25 ACC championships in school history which is more than any other league school. Clemson has won 11 titles, Duke 10 and Maryland and NC State two apiece. o The Tar Heels are 1334-325-8 in dual matches all-time and 277-68 in ACC regular season dual matches all-time. o The Tar Heels' match against on February had the unusual distinction of having all six singles matches go to three sets. *Mystical Meniane...a senior from the French department of Martinique, Meniane has been his usual steady self this year...in the fall he qualified for the ITA National Indoors in Dallas by winning five matches in the regional tourney at Chapel Hill...he then advanced to the quarterfinals at National Indoors, losing to Bendedict Dorsch of Baylor, the No. 1 player in the country at that time...he is 23-11 on the season, 14-7 in dual matches...has won seven of last nine dual matches...has 90 career singles wins as a Tar Heel...went 7-3 in tiebreakers and 6-4 in three-set matches this season...18-8 overall record in doubles...is 67-31 in his career in doubles...at No. 1 singles against Virginia he rallied from a 3-0 deficit (two services breaks down) in the final set to defeat Virginia's Doug Stewart to clich a 4-3 Tar Heel win...currently ranked No. 32 in nation in singles and No. 17 in doubles with Nicholas Monroe...went 9-9 in singles versus nationally-raned players in 2002-03, playing 18 of 34 matches against ranked foes...named 2003 All-ACC...was 6-2 in ACC dual matches...hails from Martinique, a department of the French Republic in the West Indies...the most famous person born in Martinique was Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte. *Magnificent Monroe...the junior from Olathe, Kan., Nicholas Monroe is 23-9 overall in singles this year and 64-33 in his career as a Tar Heel...2002 and 2003 All-ACC selection...Monroe reached the semifinals of ITA Mid-Atlantic Indoor regionals in Chapel Hill last fall...he was 14-4 in dual matches...Monroe finished 7-0 in ACC dual matches this season...he is 19-9 overall in doubles this campaign...Monroe has won eight straight singles matches entering the NCAA Tournament...won back to back three-set ACC encounters against Florida State and Virginia, both decided in third set tiebreakers...has the most doubles wins among the Tar Heels with 19...currently ranked No. 58 in nation in singles and No. 17 in doubles with Trystan Meniane...second on the team in singles victories with 23...clinched wins over Georgia and UTC. *Magnifying Metzler...Junior Andrew Metzler of Kansas City, Mo., was a 2002 All-ACC choice...he is 24-16 in singles including 12-6 against ACC opponents played throughout the year...has won six of seven singles matches in a row heading into NCAAs...he rallied from a 6-2, 5-4 (40-love) deficit to clinch the first singles point against Georgia by a 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 score...he reached the finals of singles in the ACC Indoor Championships in 2002...career college record is 69-42...leads team in singles wins with 24...has clinched wins over Charlotte, UAB and NC State twice, leading the team in that category. *Rock 'n Roll Tar Heel...Freshman Derek "Rock" Poter of Coral Springs, Fla., has been solid as a rock just like his professional football linebacker dad...he saved three match point in first ever UNC dual match and came to win a key singles contest against national powerhouse Georgia...three times this year he has come back from losing the first set in a dual match to claim victory...is 14-10 overall in singles...11-7 in dual matches...2003 All-ACC selection...clinched win over Auburn.
*Bragging on Boyd...A sophomore from Atlanta, Ga., Geoff Boyd is 9-11 overall and 8-8 in dual matches...has career record of 25-27...in the Virginia match he combined with Greg Archer to stage a remarkable comeback from a 7-4 deficit to force a tiebreaker, winning 9-8 (7-4), clinching the deciding doubles point in a 4-3 UNC win...clinched win over Maryland...33-29 in career doubles.
