COLLEGE PARK, Md. --Former Maryland Lacrosse coach, Dick Edell retired in September, 2001 because of myositis, a disease involving the inflammation and degeneration of skeletal muscle tissue. It is chronic and significantly limits a person's ability to live a normal life.

On Sunday, September 21, 2003, on National Myositis Awareness Day, at the University of Maryland Campus, there will be the 5K Walk-a-thon "Muscling Out Myositis" in Honor of Coach Dick Edell.

Registration for the Walk will begin at 11:00 a.m., with the Walk starting at Noon. The fee is $20 for Maryland students and Alumni Association members and $30 for non-members. The walk will start and end at Byrd stadium. Registration forms can be found at www.alumni.umd.edu. Corporate sponsorships are available at various levels-please contact Krissy Edell Kelley at 410-599-7253 for information.

The Walk-a-thon is sponsored by the University of Maryland Alumni Association Health and Human Performance Chapter and will raise much needed funding for research and awareness of the issues surrounding this disease designated by The Myositis Association.

Coach Edell was the head lacrosse coach at the University of Maryland for 18 years. Edell's 34 total years of coaching includes Towson University, University of Baltimore, Army and Maryland. He ranks fourth among NCAA lacrosse coaches in wins, with 282 victories and ranks second with 17 NCAA Division I appearances.
