Nov. 27, 2001

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech sophomore standout Renee Metivier, the national runner-up at the 2001 NCAA Cross Country Championships, was named one of four cross country nominees for the Honda Sports Award, presented to the top woman collegiate athlete in that sport.

The winner for cross country will be selected by nationwide balloting and will then become a nominee for the Honda-Broderick Cup, awarded annually to the nation's outstanding collegiate woman athlete of the year. The award will be presented at the Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year Banquet held June 17, 2002, in Dallas.

Joining Metivier as nominees are Tara Chaplin of Arizona, Lauren Fleshman of Stanford and Kristin Price of NC State.

Metivier became just the second All-American in Tech women's cross country history by virtue of her second-place finish. She captured the NCAA South Regional title and led the Jackets to their first-ever regional championships. Metivier was the Atlantic Coast Conference runner-up and was named the South Region Women's Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track Coaches Association.

In addition to the honor of this selection, the Honda Awards Program will donate $1,000 to the women's athletic fund at Tech. The winner will be announced on December 3 with her university receiving $5,000.
