ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Clemson men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill on Saturday. The men's team placed second in the 33-team field with 50 points, behind Wake Forest, who won the meet with 26 points. North Carolina finished third with 76 points, and Furman was fourth with 158 points.

Sophomore Jason Meany of Liverpool, NY, placed second with a time of 24:57, followed by senior Steve Alexander of Pickens, SC, who was third with a time of 25:00. Freshman Scott Shaw of East Syracuse, NY, placed sixth with a time of 25:19, and sophomore Clay Wiggins of Otto, NC, was 23rd with a time of 25:49. Freshman Everett Ernst of Columbia, SC, rounded out the Tiger top five, placing 33rd with a time of 26:13.

"This was a great meet," said Clemson men's head coach Bob Pollock. "The athletes did a great job."

The women's team only had four runners compete in the meet, so Clemson did not qualify for the team championship. Senior Beth Ahern of Toledo, OH, led the Tigers with a time of 17:54 to place ninth. Senior Erika van Reenen of Norcross, GA, was 13th at 18:09, and senior Anne Stowell of Charlotte, NC, placed 20th with a time of 18:34. Junior Jennifer Meador of Mechanicsville, VA, was 21st with a time of 18:38.

"This was a good week of training," said women's head coach Ralph White. "We had a good workout today. We're seeing improvement, so we're making progress."

The teams will compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on October 1.
