University of North Carolina standout and 2004 U.S. Olympian Laura Gerraughty was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Track and Field Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. Gerraughty was named to the first team, the second consecutive year in which she has earned the top honor awarded.
Gerraughty, a biology major from Nashua, N.H., owns a 3.63 grade point average and earned her eighth career All-America honor during the 2005 indoor season in the women's weight throw. She is a three-time national champion in the shot put, taking the indoor crown in 2003 and 2004, and triumphing outdoors in 2004. She also represented the United States in the shot put at the Athens Olympics.
