Dec. 4, 2007 13 Jackets Finish in Top 5 at Clemson Opener CLEMSON, S.C. - James Lemons II won the men's triple jump to lead 13 Georgia Tech track and field athletes to top-five finishes on the second day of the Clemson Opener at the Rock Norman Track & Field Complex in Clemson, S.C. Lemons earned his second top performance of the weekend with a winning and career-best mark of 52 feet, 4 ¾ inches in the triple jump. Alphonso Jordan placed second with a career-best jump of 51 feet, 5 ¾ inches. The women's squad was led by freshman Erica Penk, who won the pole vault in her first collegiate meet. Penk finished with a mark of 11 feet, 11 ¾ inches. Another freshman, Joanna Wright, also finished with a mark of 11 feet, 11 ¾ inches but took home second place when Penk only needed one attempt to clear her third height and Wright needed two.
BOSTON, Mass. - The men's and women's indoor track teams opened their winter campaigns by competing in the Husky Winter Carnival, hosted by Northeastern on Saturday, December 1. The women turned in top five performances in almost every event. Sophomore Caitlin Bailey had the Eagles' top finish in the 400 meter dash; clocking a 58.01. Senior Alison Fogarty took second in the event with a time of 58.76. Sophomore Meghan Callahan placed third in the 55 meter dash (7.36) and then took second in the 200 meter dash (25.76).
The men were also successful, marking top-five performances in six events. Senior Joshua Springer was the overall champion in the 1,000 meter run, finishing in 2:31.43 and sophomore Ryan Diorio took first in the 800 meter run. Freshman Mark Domaracki placed third in the 200 meter dash, freshman Kristopher Haynes took second in the 500 meter dash and senior Jeremy Zagorski marked a 4:19.45 in the one mile run, earning him a second place finish.
LYNCHBURG, Va. - The NC State track and field team wrapped up its stay at the Liberty Kickoff in Lynchburg, Va. to open the track and field season. A'Tolani Akinkuotu finished third in the 60 meter dash with a 6.81, a time that is good enough for the second fastest in school history behind Akinkuotu's own school record of 6.72. On the women's side, Lauren Montgomery and Cassandra Williams both competed in the finals of the 60 meter dash, turning in sub-eight second times in the process. Montgomery ran a 7.96, making her the 10th fastest performer in school history while finishing 12th. Cassandra Williams was a hundreth-of-a-second faster in the finals, finishing 11th with a 7.95. Williams owns a career-best time in the 60 meters of 7.84, the eighth-best in Wolfpack history. |
