May 23, 2006 Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Senior swimmer Elizabeth Byron was awarded a postgraduate scholarship from the NCAA, one of only 58 winter sports student-athletes nationwide to earn the distinction. Byron has been a model of excellence at BC, not only in the pool, but in the classroom and the community. She holds two individual swimming records and is part of three relay records. A two-time team MVP, Byron is the number four all-time point scorer at BC and is number one in first place finishes. The recent graduate earned a 3.97 GPA as an elementary education major and has been part of the Appalachia Voulunteer program. A CoSida and Verizon academic all-America, Byron will be given $7,500 toward continuing education. To qualify for the NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must maintain a 3.20 GPA or higher and have made a significant impact in intercollegiate competition. In addition, "the student-athlete must have behaved in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics."
