Bennett Named to Head Coaching Position
Talented coach to run women's track & field, cross country programs.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Annie Bennett has been named the new Head
Women's Track & Field and Cross Country Coach at Wake Forest University,
director of athletics Ron Wellman announced today.
Bennett comes to Wake Forest after serving as the Head Women's
Track and Cross Country Coach at Stephen F. Austin since September of 1994.
At SFA, she moved the Ladyjacks consistently up the Southland Conference
standings, culminating in a 2nd place finish in 1999. Bennett's athletes
broke 10 indoor and 11 outdoor school records during her tenure, and she
coached the school's first NCAA individual qualifier.
Prior to her coaching stint at Stephen F. Austin, Bennett
previously worked at the University of Texas as an assistant track and
cross country coach from 1992 through 1994.
Bennett enjoyed a brilliant career as a student-athlete at Texas,
highlighted when she captured the NCAA National Championship in the 5,000
meters and earned All-America honors in 1987. She led Texas to the 1986
NCAA Cross Country National Championship and was a member of the Longhorns'
1986 NCAA Outdoor National Championship team.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Bennett earned a B.A. in Economics
from Texas in 1988 and a master's degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from
Southwest Texas State in 1995.
