Verban Bows out in the NCAA Quarterfinals
Eliminated for women's tennis singles championship.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Wake Forest sophomore Mariel Verban was
eliminated from the 1999 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championship in the
quarterfinals this morning. She lost in three sets to Marissa Irvin of
Stanford, the nation's third-ranked player, 7-6, 4-6, 0-6. Verban ends the
season with an overall singles record of 43-17, a Wake Forest record for
wins in a season.
Verban is the only Deacon ever to reach the quarterfinals of the
NCAA Championship. Despite not being seeded in the tournament, she ousted
two seeded players, Agnes Muzamel and Anousjka Van Exel. Her performance
at this season's NCAAs earned her All-American honors.
She earned All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors for a second
consecutive season, while winning the ITA Southeast Regional Indoor
Championship. Verban was also runner-up at No. 1 singles in the ACC.
