Deacons to Host Inaugural Collegiate Women's Golf Tournament
Bryan National to be held March 27-29.
Final preparations are being completed for the inaugural Bryan
National Collegiate women's golf tournament to be played March 27-29 at the
Bryan Park Champions Course located north of Greensboro in Browns Summit,
NC.
The 15-team event, part of the Rolex Collegiate Golf Tour, will be
co-hosted by Wake Forest and UNC Greensboro. Eight schools ranked among
the nation's top-25 teams, according to the March 11th MasterCard
Collegiate Rankings, will be among the field.
Eight individual players are among the 20 best collegiate women's
players in the country according to MasterCard. Included in that list is
Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn, ranked sixth, who recently won two individual
tournament titles. Rounding out the players ranked among the top-20 are
A.J. Eathorne of New Mexico State (No. 3), Alexandra Armas of Wake Forest
(No. 8), Riko Higashio of Florida (No. 9), Jennifer Hanna of Furman (No.
12), Shauna Estes and Reilley Rankin of Georgia (Nos. 13 & 14), and Robin
Cook of Auburn (No. 17).
The tournament committee is looking to separate this event from the
rest of the regular season golf tournaments that teams will participate in
during the 1998 season. The Bryan National Collegiate is well on its way
to achieving that goal.
Tournament participants will receive gifts from Antigua, Burlington
Industries, Izod, Nike, and Wrangler Jeans in addition to attending the
Carolina Hurricanes-New York Rangers hockey game scheduled the night before
the tournament tees off. Players and coaches will also be treated to
several dinners during their stay in the Greensboro area.
Local support for the tournament has been very positive as several
organizations are donating materials and volunteers to the tournament.
That list includes: the Bryan Park Complex, Bryan Park Ladies Golf
Association, Chrysler Corporation, Greater Greensboro Convention & Visitors
Bureau, Greensboro Country Club Ladies Association, Greensboro Coliseum,
Greensboro Jaycees, Greensboro Sports Commission, Hilton of Greensboro,
Jefferson-Pilot Financial, and Titleist.
Tournament play will begin at 8:30 a.m. all three days. The final
round on Sunday will be a shotgun start. Admission to the tournament is
free to the public.
