Deacons Included in Final Fall ITA Rankings
Women ranked No. 9, men ranked in top 75.

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its
final fall rankings for 1998 on Tuesday morning and Wake Forest was included
in the men's and women's team and individual rankings.
The Wake Forest women's team will begin the 1999 season with a ranking of
No. 9 after finishing the 1998 season with a final rank of 11th. Sophomore
Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL) will also start the new season with a top 10
singles ranking, 10th. Verban finished the fall season with a record of
17-4 and an ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Singles Championship. She won 13
of her final 14 matches, including her final six. Freshman Janet Bergman
(Pinehurst, NC) is tied for 51st in the singles rankings.
The Deacon men's squad also improved on its final ranking from last season,
moving up five places from 63rd to 58th in the country. The doubles team of
Myles Clouston (Durban, South Africa) and Raul Munoz (Mexico City, Mexico)
is ranked sixth. The duo posted a 5-3 mark during the fall, including a
trip to the finals of the National Clay Court Championships.
Clouston ranks 24th as a singles competitor. He competed in three
tournaments this fall, winning eight of 12 matches. Clouston finished the
1998 season with a final ranking of 49th.
Both teams will begin the 1999 season at the ACC Indoor Championships. The
men's tournament will begin on Jan. 21 in Winston-Salem, NC and the ladies
championship starts on Jan. 22 in Chapel Hill, NC.
