Four Deacs Selected to Compete in NCAAs
Men's doubles, two singles women's tennis players to compete.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Four members of the Wake Forest tennis
program were selected to compete in the 1999 Division I Individual
Championships: Myles Clouston, Raul Munoz, Janet Bergman, and Mariel
Verban. Clouston and Munoz will compete as a doubles team in the men's
championships, while Verban and Bergman will participate as singles in the
women's championships.
Clouston and Munoz received one of the two automatic bids from
Region II, consisting of four states: Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina
and South Carolina. The duo posted 27 wins this season, two shy of the
school record, and was the ACC No. 1 Doubles Flight champion. The Deacon
combo is currently ranked eighth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) rankings.
Sophomore Mariel Verban and freshman Janet Bergman were both at
large selections, becoming only the fourth and fifth Deacons to be chosen
to particiapte in the women's championships. Bergman joins Terry Ann
Zawacki as the only Wake freshmen to be selected to the field.
Verban, who was an alternate choice during the 1998 NCAA
Championships, is an All-ACC selection and ranked as the 11th best
collegiate player in the country. Verban needs only one victory to become
Wake's single season wins leader. She has triumphed in 38 matches this
season.
Bergman was named 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year and an All-ACC pick.
She won 29 matches this season was named the team's Most Valuable Player.
Bergman is currently ranked 41st as a singles competitor by the ITA.
The men's championships will be May 26-30 at the University of
Georgia in Athens, Ga. The women's championships will be conducted at the
University of Florida on May 23-27 in Gainesville, Fla. Seeding for the
championships will be announced at a later date.
