Phillipp Receives National Sportsmanship Award
Men's tennis standout earns top honors.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman Rick Phillipp has been
named the recipient of the 1999 Bill Talbert National Junior Sportsmanship
Award. Phillipp, a member of the Deacons' tennis team, was nominated by
the Midwest Tennis Association for the selection process involving all 17
of the United States Tennis Association's sections.
Phillipp will receive his award at the 1999 International Tennis
Hall of Fame ceremonies, which are being held July 9-11 in Newport, RI.
This will coincide with ceremonies inducting John McEnroe into the Hall of
Fame.
As a high school senior, Phillipp won the 1998 Indiana State
Singles Championship. He was also a member of four Junior Davis Cup teams.
Phillipp recorded his first collegiate dual match victory on March 25,
1999. He defeated Maryland's Jon Murchison in three sets: 6-4, 6-7 (7),
6-2. Phillipp is 2-3 in dual match play this spring.
